Rambunctious Ratios
We are learning to use multiplication and division to solve proportion and ratios problems.
Multiplication and Division Practice.
Work these problems out in your mind and discuss your strategies with your group. Show a couple of strategies below, but the rest of the questions can just be answered
29 x 20 = 580 33 x 15 = 495 76 x 24 = 1824 65 x 17 = 1105
72 x 15 = 1080 33 x 16 = 528 34 x 31 = 1054 42 x 26 = 1092
90 ÷ 30 = 30 280 ÷ 40 = 7 300 ÷ 12 = 25 625 ÷ 25 = 25
Word problem of the week:
For every 8 girls in a school, there are 12 boys. If there are 60 students in the school, how many girls and boys are there in the school? 8 girls to 12 boys or 8:12. 12 x 3 = 36. And 8 x 3 = 24. 36 + 24 = 60 students. There would be 24 girls to 36 boys or 24:36
Wicked word problems!
Solve these problems. Write down your strategies:
Jermaine has 120 lollies to share between some friends. How many lollies would each friend get if there were 8 altogether? What if there were 16 or 24 people? 120 represents the lollies and 8 represents the people. Ratio is 120:8 which is also 120 lollies to 8 people. If there was 16 people, 8 x 2 = 16. Now you do the same to the other side, 120 x 2 = 240. The new ratio would be 240:16 which is also 240 lollies to 16 people!
It takes 3 minutes to hang out 12 items of clothing. How long will it take to hang out 36 items? 3:12 is the original ratio. The new ratio is that there is now 36 where the 12 would be which represents the items of clothing. 12 x 3 = 36. Do the same to the other side, 3 x 2 = 9. It would take 9 minutes to hang 36 items of clothing - 9:36
A pancake recipe calls for 3 cups of flour and 2 eggs. Marika is going to make several batches to bring to the garage sale. If she wants to use 8 eggs, how many cups of flour will she use? 2 x 4 = 8.. 3 x 4 = 12. 12:8
At the pools, one lifeguard is required for every 25 people. If there are 150 people booked to swim, how many lifeguards need to be working? 1:25 is the original ratio they gave us. Now they are giving us 150 people and asking how many lifeguards needed for that. The relationship between 25 and 150 is multiply 6. Now we do it to the other side so 1 x 6 = 6. Updated ratio is 6:150
The pools also say that one adult can only look after two children under 5. If Pt England Kids are going swimming and they are taking 30 children, how many adults will they need? 1:2 and 2 x 15 = 30. 1 x 15 = 15. 15 adults to 30 kids.
If the ratio is 2:8 then it is also 14:56 because 8 x 7 = 56 and 2 x 7 = 14. The relationship between the number 2 and 14 is 7, same goes to 8 and 56.
