Ben Johnson story

In 1988, during the Olympics there was the 100 metre final race. The competitors all lined up, all eyes were on  Ben Johnson and Carl Lewis. It was going to be a tough race !

As soon as the gun  went off Ben Johnson’s start was phenomenal. He was coming 1st, not only did he win but he ran a new world record.  Ben Johnson got the gold medal but 3 hours later there was a shocking announcement.

They tested a sample of Ben Johnson to see if he used any drugs. When they tested the sample they tried it again to see if it was positive. Ben Johnson was caught using drugs!

He knew he was banned from the Olympics for life. He disappointed his country, Canada. The Host country took the gold medal off Ben Johnson and gave it to Carl Lewis.

Pheidippides

A long time ago in Ancient Greece there was a war in a town named Marathon, the Greeks were fighting the Persians. While fighting, the Greeks were winning against the Persians. Happily and with lots of luck, the Greeks won.

The boss of the Athenian army said to one of his fittest soldier named Pheidippides, “Go run to the emperor of Athens to spread the good news”. Pheidippides ran to Athens, he had to run 42.2 km. He ran up the highest mountains and ran around some cliffs. He was so dehydrated yet he never gave up.

Pheidippides finally arrived at Athens. He shouted “Joy, we won!” He took his last breath and collapsed to the ground. Pheidippides will be remembered as the person who invented the meaning of the word Marathon.

The Olympic Flame

The Ancient Greeks started the tradition of having an Olympic flame in Olympia. A sacred flame is lit by the sun's rays and stays alight until the games have ended. The flame symbolized a request for protection from Zeus and the athletes struggles for victory.

The modern flame symbolizes the light of the spirit, knowledge and life. To this day, the torch is still lit in Olympia in Greece, then carried by a relay team passing runner to runner until it reaches the host-city of the games. There, the cauldron will be lit and stay alight until the closing ceremony.
